How do debit and credit cards work?

Debit cards are linked directly to the cardholder’s bank account. When used to purchase goods or services the payment is withdrawn from the cardholders bank account straight away. Debit card transaction is in effect an electronic cheque.

Credit cards
mean that the customer is “buying on credit”. The issuer of the cards sets up a credit account for the cardholder which he has to pay off monthly or spread the payments over several months paying the issuer interest for the facility.
